Pakistan information – Pakistan General Information

Pakistang TourPakistan, officially Islamic Republic of Pakistan, republic in South Asia, marking the area where South Asia converges with Southwest Asia and Central Asia. Pakistan is situated between latitude 24 and 37 degrees North and longitude 62 and 75 degrees East. The country borders Iran on the west, India in the east, Afghanistan in the north-west, China in the north and the Arabian Sea on the south. The capital of Pakistan is Islamabad; Karachi is the country's largest city. The official name of Pakistan was used after the partition of (British) India into the 2 states of India and Pakistan in 1947. The country is divided into four provinces: Sindh, Baluchistan, Punjab and the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). The once Mughal Empire was divided into the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (with two sections West and East) and largely Hindu, abeit secular India. A third war between these countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan seceding and becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. A dispute over the state of Jammu and Kashmir is ongoing between India and Pakistan. The great mountain ranges of the Himalayas, the Karakorams and the Hindukush form Pakistan. Northern highlands of North West Frontier Province and the Northern Area. Punjab province is a flat, alluvial plain with five major rivers dominating the upper region eventually joining the Indus River flowing south to the Arabian Sea. Sindh is bounded on the east by the Thar Desert and the Rann of Kutch and on the west by the Kirthar range and the Balochistan Plateau is an arid tableland, encircled by dry mountains.

Pakistan is an Islamic state and the vast majority of the population is Muslims. Muslims are the followers of the Prophet Mohammed. Though Christians and Muslims fought a protracted war for supremacy of their ideology, the two religions have much in common. Pakistan's population of 128 million is one of the fastest-growing in Asia. The two largest ethnic groups are the Punjabis, an Indo-Aryan people who dominate political and business life, and the Pashtuns, who work mainly as herders and farmers. The northern areas are home to many distinct ethnic groups, whose eclectic heritage is the result of intermarriage between local peoples and invaders from elsewhere in Europe and Asia. The official language is Urdu, and English is used extensively in business. Karachi is the capital of the Sind province. It is a bustling center of commerce and industry, a big port and the largest city of Pakistan with a population of over seven million. It has an International Airport which is a major link on all east and west air routes. Karachi has sunny beaches at Sandspit, Hawkes Bay, Paradise Point and Clifton. It has a lot to offer, including the National Museum, the Hill Park, a golf course, a squash complex and modern medical facilities. Northern areas of Pakistan are blessed with some of the worlds most rugged and splendid mountain scenery. This vast land of eternal snow is the abode of five of the worlds major 8, 000 meter peaks. K-2 pronounced as (Chogori) in Balti language is the jewel of the Karakoram range. Towards the western Himalaya lies Nanga Parbat the worlds ninth highest. Even today, these mountains are less well explored and mapped than other comparable mountain regions, and many peaks over 6000 meters remain unnamed and unclimbed. Not only does this region posses lofty mountains but some of the worlds longest glaciers outside the polar region.
